Chronicles Thus Far...

Captain Thoradin, recently disgraced Runehammer Navy ship’s captain, was approached by an emissary of Mentor to put together a team of adventurers for a special mission. He recruited Conan, Valim, and Manik. The team was also joined by Mentor’s assistant Rhogar.

After a series of training missions the team was captured by the enraged orc leader Grak, and barely escaped from his lair.

Rhogar split off from the team to inform Mentor of their whereabouts and activities.

Before managing to return to Varanas the team discovered the existence of a bandit king named Lamuud. Redlan joined the team at this point. The team tried to hunt down and end this menace to the country but were instead defeated, Thoradin being forced to swear fealty to the would be “king” for a year in exchange for his companions lives.

The team spent the next several months serving as Lamuud’s agents. They encountered Maleec in one quest who was separated from the party and is presumed dead.

The team must finish their service to the king and still find a way to end his tyranny over the area.

Saving Rhogar

You have been serving Lamuud for months. You have managed to avoid hurting any innocents during this term, despite several “tax collecting” missions. He has given you free reign within his camps, but there is always someone with any of you when leaving the grounds. Every couple of weeks he changes locations at random. Currently his location is abutting the mountainous ranges to the west, on a broad plain only reachable by a shallow ford that is closely watched a few miles to the south. The rest of the river is unpassable due to the strength of the current and the many dangerous rapids. During some of his mad rambling Lamuud has revealed that he is looking for something, what he calls his birthright. He believes this thing will restore him to his “rightful” place as King of Silverspring and Varanas.
Thor has been called before him. He has ignored the group for the past few weeks, and the reason for this summons is unknown. As you approach his tent he is standing out in front of it, conversing with his lackeys. They all wear dark cloaks pinned with a strange symbol of a two-headed snake breaking a circle into two halves, one black one white. With the time you’ve had to observe the comings and going within the encampment your insight has told you that these men are feeding Lamuud‘s madness, perhaps for some other purpose.
As you approach he eyes you dully, a brief moment of recognition and he smiles broadly. “You will have the chance to redeem yourselves! The thing that I seek…”
He is interrupted by by the whoops and yelling coming from the direction of the river. A party comes into view, three of Lamuud’s slavers leading a chained dragonborn prisoner and a pair of gnomes trailing behind. The prisoner is a mass of cuts and bruises, and he is so weak the slavers are nearly dragging him along. Pulling up in front of Lamuud‘s tent one of the slavers shoves the prisoner to his knees in front of the bandit lord. The slave r then reaches under his chin and jerks his head up. You recognize him as Mentor’s assistant, Rhogar. “This paladin tried to cross the river into your lands m’lord, then attacked several of your dutiful servants collecting tolls. Several of your men are dead at his hands lord.”
Lamuud looks down at the kneeling Rhogar. “Kill him.” You must save the paladin’s life!

The team was unsuccessful in negotiating for the paladin’s life, but they were able to save him after being ordered by Lamuud to personally kill him. Rhogar informed them about what was really happening in Lamuud’s campaign, his camp had been infiltrated by the Cult of Zhuridon, and that the “birthright” he was seeking was actually a portal the Zhuridon believe will allow them to gain power.
Lamuud sent the team on a mission to recover it, they must find a way to destroy it!

Into the mountains, and the underground cavern

“You will be given a chance to redeem yourselves and prove your devotion to the King. I have sent servants up the river to find an ancient temple that holds my birthright. You will follow them and assist them in their task. Do not fail me.”

The team successfully managed to navigate the torrid waters of the mountain river, and found themselves in an underground cavern featuring a huge underground lake and a path leading up into the cavern heights. The followed the path up, encountering various cult ruins and cult members sent to hinder their progress. Gnomes, owlbears, and even necrotic traps were defeated on their journey up.

Temple of Tombs

_“The path continues to lead upward, still circling the underground lake below. Looming ahead at the end of the path is a large structure that rises up into the roof of the cavern itself. The whole place glows faintly with surreal light. As you near what is obviously the temple, features that should have become clearer seem only to blur and warp even more. As your eye moves from one feature to the next and back again it’s not the same. Your mind rebels at the impossibility of the place, you can’t pin it down! How will you navigate a temple that is always changing? As you close in on the temple a terrible shrieking fills the air, and the very earth seems to tremble. Something is going on in that place. Could the Zhuridon have found the portal they were looking for?” _

The team is currently navigating the Temple, what will they find when they reach it’s summit?

The Portal in the Temple of Tombs

“You will not prevent us from reaching our destiny! The portal opens! Servants! Attack the interlopers! I will speed the portals opening and Zhur will surely send us aid!”

Four of our group made it to the final chamber of the Temple of Tombs, Captain Thoradin, Conan, Valim, and Manik even managed to rejoin them there. The four of them entered the room where the Deathpriest of Zhur was busy trying to open a large portal in the center of the room with a pair of Battle Wights and a pair of Crimson Acolytes by his side. The battle was joined immediately.

Manik led the charge, moving to attack the Deathpriest right away. Captain Thoradin realized right away that the priest needed to be distracted from his attempt, so Captain Thoradin’s voiced boomed out over the din, promising the impending death of the priest. Manik and Conan made good on that threat, with Manik dealing a devastating blow and Conan following up with the final grievance.

The Wights worked effectively as a team, one immobilizing while the other took advantage to heal themselves. The Acolytes were less so, but still as determined to bring the fight to the team. With the Priest down the team focused on bringing the wights and acolytes down with him. When the last Wight fell slain the team breathed a sigh of relief.

They should have been more concerned about the still opening portal.

“I die, yet have achieved my goal. Behold! Zhur’s minion answers my call! ,the Priest cried weakly with his last breath. And indeed he was correct, a hideous and large spider crawled through the portal into the room. Captain Thoradin, Conan, and Manik all moved to intercept the spider while Valim focused his efforts on effecting a way of closing the portal. Conan and Manik approached the beast directly, while Captain Thoradin flanked from the rear and charged, knocking the spider off it’s feat.

While working on the portal a swarm of spiders appeared and attacked Valim, forcing his retreat to focus on the task at hand. Valim eventually disturbed the portal enough to close it, and was able to defend himself from the swarm. Conan and the rest, after dispatching the larger spider, came to his assistance.

Looking around the group realized that the magical aspect of the Temple was no longer effective, revealing the decrepit condition of the place. They also found a [[Duelist Bow +3]] and 4k gold among the corpses. There was also a rumbling from the building, it was time to get out.

Vile Maleec

Leaving the Temple of Tombs, the group began their journey back to Lamuud’s camp. Talk in the group centered on confronting the Bandit King over what they had found and prevented back in the Temple. Conan was particularly adamant about ending the threat posed by the would-be king.

Along the way they encountered a warlock, Mari, who joined them as they returned to Silverspring.

Crossing a small wooden bridge over a creek they were ambushed by a pair of bandits, and Maleec accompanied by some spectral panthers. The bandits approached from the front, while Maleec and the panthers assaulted them from the rear, pinning the group, for the most part, along or near the bridge.

The quickly recovered from the attack and dispatched ambushing squad, ending Maleec’s threat forever. A quick search of his body revealed why he had made the attempt on their lives. There was a note, signed by Lamuud that read:

_Maleec,
my most trusted servant. The infidel dwarf and his companions do not yet know you still live. The time has come to eliminate them. They are not loyal the the Zhuridon. Find them, eliminate them.

Your service will be rewarded,
Lamuud, King of Silverpring_

Lamuud, having ordered their death, has freed Captain Thoradin from his obligation to the mad lord. Their final confrontation is imminent.

Into the Twilight Mine

Following the instructions found on the body of Maleec, the party found it’s way to the entrance to a forgotten temple, where the note and map said they would find a way into an abandoned mine leading to the other side of the mountains.

Redlan and Valim have temporarily left the party,and they were joined instead by the cleric Avalon and a wizard by the name of Ghesh.

Entering the temple the found that troglodytes had entered the area and were converting the decrepit temple to their own needs. A Curse Chanter and several Maulers attacked the party immediately. After engaging the party the Chanter ran upstairs, and Thor, undecided if it was trying to run away or assist from above, gave chase and threw the Chanter to the floor below where Conan and the cleric Avalon waited.

Having dispatched the Trogs, the group set about finding the entrance to the mine. In an upstairs room they discovered a locked chest, which held inside it the ruins of a journal written in code. They have taken it with them for further study.

Soon after Thoradin found a note on a bookshelf describing the secret entrance to the mine, and the group entered it. At the other end of a brief tunnel they discovered their route was hidden from the other side by a waterfall cascading down, but it also obstructed their view of the other side. Charging through the waterfall they found a group of troglodytes led by a trio of Drow.

Crying their battle cries they waded into their midst, and shortly after the last drow fell. They are now in the depths of the mine, which direction will lead them to the surface, and to Lamuud?
